How to Take Care of Your Candles

You may be thinking, really, Sam. Who has time to add a candle routine to everything else I have got going on! But if you are like me and like to spend money on candles for your home and or work, keep reading! It is all about making the most out of each candle!

Follow these easy steps below:

  1. When you light your candle for the first time, make sure that the entire surface of the candle melts before you put it out. Why? If you don't, then you could end up with a rim of wax that never melts. This is called tunneling, and you have probably seen it before. Candle experts say that this process usually takes about an hour. So heads-up, don't light the candle for the first time unless you have at least an hour to spare.

  2. Keep your candle clean. Once you have used your candle a few times, you may notice soot and other debris accumulated inside the container. Clean the gunk out the moment you see it. Use a dry towel to wipe the soot. Whenever you see wax trimmings, be sure to use tweezers and remove them from the wax.

  3. Trim your candles wick. If you want an even burn, make sure the wick is at the right length. The recommended length is 0.25 inches. Use scissors or a wick trimmer to trim it neatly.

  4. Did you know that you shouldn't burn your candle all the way through? You should leave about 0.5 inches of wax inside the vessel. You can use a candle melter to melt the rest of the wax or place it in the freezer, which causes the wax to shrink, allowing you to get it out more easily. Give your vessel another life and repurpose it for your jewelry, flower vase, orchid pot, makeup brushes, pencil/pen holder, drinking glass, etc.

  5. It is recommended that candles be stored in a cool, dark place. Candles can go bad. Temperature and light can speed the aging process of your candle. They can lose their fragrance and become discolored. Try to light your candle within 12 to 16 months of buying them.

  6. Let your candle burn for about 3 to 4 hours at a time. The fragrance is emitted from the evaporation of the puddle of hot melted wax.

  7. Don't let your candle mushroom. Be sure to remove the mushroom-like shape from your wick before lighting it. The mushroom creates a large, smoky flame.
